Council of Science Editors (CSE) 2024 Annual Meeting

The Council of Science Editors (CSE) held its 2024 Annual Meeting from May 4th to 7th at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront in Portland, Oregon. The theme for this year’s meeting was "Communicating Science for a Sustainable Future."

Editors-in-Chief, editors, associate editors, managing editors, manuscript editors, copy editors, chairs of publications committees, publication managers, journal staff, and others in management positions in the journal publishing industry were in attendance. Representing our journal was our Editor-in-Chief, Dr. James Kigera.

The annual meeting featured a series of short courses tailored for Journal Editors, Manuscript Editors, as well as sessions focusing on Publication Ethics, the Business of Publication Management, and an Advanced Short Course on Publication Management. Our Editor-in-Chief attended the Business of Publication Management course where various aspects of making the journal viable were discussed. On the sidelines of the course, Dr. Kigera held discussions with Annette Flanagin of JAMA and Jill Jackson of Annals of Internal Medicine on ways to progress the indexing journey of the Annals of Africa Surgery.

Key themes were also discussed in the meeting and they covered topics such as "Evolving Roles and Relationships for a Sustainable Publishing Ecosystem: A Discussion with the CSE Industry Advisory Board," "Ethics Clinic: Paper Mills and Predatory Publishers," and "Artificial Intelligence in Scholarly Publishing: Responding to Opportunities and Risks." In addition to that, there were also 21 concurrent breakout sessions for the attendees which focused on important issues in scholarly publishing.

A notable highlight of the meeting was the unveiling of The CSE Manual, Ninth Edition, titled "The CSE Manual: Scientific Style and Format for Authors, Editors, and Publishers." This comprehensive manual delivers a complete coverage of rules and best practices in scientific publishing, reflecting the Council of Science Editors' long-standing tradition of providing authoritative guidance on clearly and effectively writing scientific manuscripts since 1960.

The ninth edition aims to offer the most extensive recommendations yet, guiding authors and editors through the ever-evolving world of scientific publishing.

With each meeting, the Council of Science Editors continues to foster collaboration, innovation, and excellence in scientific communication, ensuring that research remains accessible and impactful for generations to come.

The next CSE Annual Meeting is scheduled for May 3rd to 6th, 2025, in Minneapolis. It promises further progress in scholarly communication to members in the scientific publishing, and information science communities by fostering networking, education, discussion, and exchange.

We are grateful for the support of AJPP in helping our editors attend these great educational activities.
