Fundamentals of Surgical Research Course and Scientific Writing Workshop

COSECSA in collaboration with the Namibian Surgical Society (NSS) held the 22nd COSECSA and NSS events, Graduation and Scientific Conference in Windhoek, Namibia from 5th to 9th December 2022. The theme of the conference was “Timely Response to Current & Emerging Surgical Challenges on the Continent”

The Annals of African Surgery had the honor of hosting the Fundamentals of Surgical Research Course and Scientific Writing Workshop on the final day of the conference in collaboration with the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS). Our editor in chief, Dr. James Kigera, assistant editors, Drs. Michael Mwachiro and Chalwe Mumba, and editorial board member, Dr. Peter Nthumba were present.

The workshop's course schedule was divided into four sessions: surgical research methods, the nuts and bolts of the methods, publishing and presenting, and success tips and best practices. Our editors gave different presentations in each of the sessions.

Dr. Kigera gave two presentations: "Basics of Biostatistics, Bias, and Confounding" and "Reasons Why It Is Necessary to Do Surgical Research." A presentation on "Clinical Trials Research" and another on "Mentor/Mentee Relationship: Finding the Right Mentor" were both given by Dr. Mwachiro. How to Be a Good Reviewer for a Journal was the topic of Dr. Mumba's presentation. For Dr. Peter Nthumba, he gave a presentation on “Funding and Opportunities for COSECSA Researchers.”
